THREE HARBOR LIGHTS OF DIVINE GUIDANCE | Jeanne Mayo

If you’ve walked with Jesus for any length of time, you already know this: life can feel like navigating a stormy harbor at midnight. You want to make the right decision. You want to honor God. You want to avoid the kind of crash‑landing that leaves emotional debris scattered everywhere.

And because I’ve lived a few decades now, I’ve learned that guidance is one of the biggest stress points in the Christian life. We want to know God’s will. We want to know His direction. We want to know we’re not about to run our ship into the rocks.

That’s why I love the old Italian seacoast story so much. It’s become one of my favorite metaphors for divine guidance.

THE STORY OF THE THREE HARBOR LIGHTS
Many years ago, there was a popular seacoast in Italy used by ships for major transports. But the port had a terrible reputation. Hidden beneath the waterline were massive coastal edges—huge rock formations stretching far out into the ocean. Captains couldn’t see them, especially at night, and ships would crash violently into those submerged cliffs.

After countless tragedies, captains dreaded entering that harbor. They feared their inability to guide their vessel properly. They feared another wreck. They feared the storm.

Something had to change.

A wise, elderly ship captain finally devised a brilliant solution. He mounted three large harbor lights along the coastline of that dangerous port. Then he told incoming captains:

“As you chart your course, line up all three harbor lights visually as ONE. When they appear as a single light, you’re on the right path.”

If even one light was out of alignment, they knew their guidance was off‑course.

Storms still came. Lightning still flashed. Thunder still roared. But the captains learned that their safety was never found in focusing on the storm. Their only job was to keep the three harbor lights aligned as one.

And so it is with me. And so it is with you. And so it is with all of us who want God’s direction.

We all want to know that the Lord is guiding our lives. We want to avoid wrong turns, wrong relationships, wrong decisions, and wrong pathways. We want our “spiritual navigational system” to be accurate.

And God, in His kindness, has given us three harbor lights—three ways to confirm His guidance.

• Harbor Light #1 — The Word of God
• Harbor Light #2 — The Peace of God
• Harbor Light #3 — Circumstances

When all three line up as one, you can rest confidently that you’re on the right path.
Proverbs 3:5–6 says it beautifully:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and don’t lean on your own human understanding. Seek His will in all you do and He will show you which path to take.”

HARBOR LIGHT #1 — THE WORD OF GOD
The first harbor light is always Scripture. Always.

Psalm 119:130 says, “The teaching of your Word gives light, so even the simple can understand.” Psalm 119:133 adds, “Direct my footsteps according to Your Word.”

God’s Word is the anchor. The compass. The foundation. Without it, people get weird—really weird—when it comes to guidance.

My “Outer Mongolia” Story

During my senior year of college, we had a loud, obnoxious, super‑spiritual classmate—let’s call him Harvey. He loved interrupting chapel with dramatic “Thus sayeth the Lord…” proclamations.

My guy friends finally had enough.

They discovered Harvey’s dorm room number, climbed into the ceiling tiles of the room next door, and used their best “God‑voice” to deliver a booming prophetic word:
Harvey believed it completely. He even announced it proudly during chapel testimony time.

Eventually the guys confessed. Harvey was devastated—but it proved the point:

If your guidance doesn’t line up with Scripture, you can end up with some pretty off‑the‑wall results.

My Real Rhema Moments
Unlike Harvey’s fiasco, God has used Scripture to guide me in profound ways.

As a high school senior, I desperately wanted to enter full‑time ministry but begged God for a supernatural sign. One morning, Luke 10:2 came alive:
“The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few. So pray that the Lord of the harvest send laborers into His harvest.”

God whispered to my young heart: “Jeanne, where do you think your desire for ministry came from—Me or the enemy?”

My desire was my call.

Another moment came when my young son Josh was hospitalized and undergoing painful tests. After a traumatic blood draw, I broke down in the elevator, pounding the walls and crying out:
Later, sitting beside Josh’s crib, I opened my Bible to Deuteronomy 2:3:
“You have encompassed THIS MOUNTAIN long enough.”

The words jumped off the page. God was promising the end of a long medical battle—and two days later, Josh began healing.

The Word Always Comes First
Most guidance won’t be dramatic. Often it’s simple:

• “My peace I give unto you…Let not your heart be troubled.”
• “Forgive others 70 times 7.”

But the principle remains:
All of God’s guidance begins and ends with His Word. He will never violate Scripture.

HARBOR LIGHT #2 — THE PEACE OF GOD
The second harbor light is the inward peace of God—an internal calm, an inward knowing.

Colossians 3:15 says:
“Let the peace of God rule (acting like an UMPIRE) in your hearts…calling in and out the plays.”

Peace is the umpire. It calls the shots.

You can’t have the peace of God until you have peace with God. But once you do, His peace becomes one of the clearest indicators of direction.

Often, when I’m not sure of the right next step, I simply start moving and watch what happens to my peace level.

If my peace gets rattled, I stop. If my peace stays steady, I keep going.

A moving car is easier to steer than a parked one.

HARBOR LIGHT #3 — CIRCUMSTANCES
This is the harbor light people rely on too heavily. Circumstances should confirm God’s guidance—not replace it.

Circumstances include:

• Open and shut doors
• Financial provision
• Wise counsel
• Direction from trusted spiritual authorities
• Supernatural signs (prophecy, dreams, words of knowledge)

Isaiah 22:22 says:
“When He opens doors, no one will be able to close them. And when He closes doors, no one will be able to open them.”

But I often remind students who say they don’t have tuition money:
“The Lord does not supply to the HEAD that is on the BED!”

Circumstances matter—but they are the third harbor light, not the first.

WHEN THE LIGHTS DON’T LINE UP
If only one or two harbor lights line up—but not the third—it usually means one of two things:

1. It is not God’s will
2. It is not God’s timing

Psalm 37:4 says:
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”

That doesn’t mean God gives you everything you want. It means that as you delight in Him, He reshapes your desires. Over time, your desire for something will either grow—or slowly wither and die.

That’s guidance.

THE “LOST IN TARGET” STORY
One summer day, a little boy named Benjamin wandered away from his dad in a Super Target. Panic set in. Every adult looked scary. He raced through aisle after aisle, terrified he’d never find his father again.

Finally, a strong hand rested on his shoulder. His father had found him.

Through tears, Benjamin said:
“Dad, I thought I was LOST and would never be able to find my way back home again.”

His father replied:
“Benjamin, the next time you get lost, stop running. Just stand still…remember my promise that I’ll never leave you… And start calling my name.”

What a picture of divine guidance.

When you feel lost… When fear sets in… When you can’t find your way…

Stand still. Remember His promise. Call His name.

MY FINAL ENCOURAGEMENT TO YOU
We began with Proverbs 3:5–6, and it’s the perfect place to end:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart…Seek His will in all you do…and He will show you which path to take.”

God is not hiding His will from you. He is guiding you—faithfully, lovingly, consistently.

Just line up the three harbor lights:
The Word of God. The Peace of God. Circumstances.

When they shine as one, you can move forward with confidence, courage, and joy.

And like those captains in the old Italian harbor, you’ll discover that no matter how fierce the storm becomes, you are safe when you keep your eyes on the lights—not the storm.
